Hello everyone, my name is James Reginald Garrett, I'm from Newport News, Virginia and I am a freshman Psychology major at Morehouse College. My parents, James L. Garrett and Ronnetta Y. Staley are from Madisonville, Kentucky and Columbia, South Carolina, respectively.
I was raised by my mother who made sure I was surrounded by positive energy, positive people, and love. My elementary school years, middle school years, and high school years were all spent in the Achievable Dream program where I learned academically and socially. My church home will forever be Calvary Seventh-Day Adventist church, it was there that I discovered a lot about myself spiritually which in turn helped me grow into a young man. I became a member of Heritage High School's NJROTC Program my freshman year of high school; here is where my timid shell cracked and authority and leadership traits formed.
Initially, I was against coming to Morehouse College because of the $45,000 price tag it came with. However, after weeks of prayer and listening to those who had my best interest at heart I knew that attending Morehouse would help me become the man I aspire to be. I could get the same education at Old Dominion or Norfolk State, but the brotherhood and inspiration found in each other could only come from this institution. As the great Frederick Douglass once said "Without struggle, there is no progress."
